"Mongolian Pine Nuts" refers to the seeds of the Siberian Pine (Pinus sibirica Du Tour) belonging to the Pine family (Pinaceae Lindl.)

"Mongolian Pine Nuts" refers to the seeds of the Siberian Pine (Pinus sibirica Du Tour) belonging to the Pine family (Pinaceae Lindl.). These pine nuts are harvested from the regions of Arkhangai, Bayan-Ölgii, Bulgan, Töv, Zavkhan, Khentii, Uvs, Selenge, Övörkhangai, Khuvsgul, and the green zone of Ulaanbaatar city. The geographical indication refers to fresh, dried, or whole dried seeds with their shells intact from the species "Pinus sibirica."

The "Mongolian Pine Nuts" is characterized by its elongated cylindrical or teardrop shape, small size, dense texture, and sweet, oily taste. The outer shell of the nut is moderately hard, rough in texture, and shiny brown in color.

According to studies, "Mongolian Pine Nuts" contains about 30% more pinolenic acid than pine nuts from other countries.

The geographical indication for "Mongolian Pine Nuts" covers the regions of Arkhangai, Bayan-Ölgii, Bulgan, Töv, Zavkhan, Khentii, Uvs, Selenge, Övörkhangai, Khuvsgul, and the green zone of Ulaanbaatar city.

Although Mongolia's pine forests have more resources compared to regular pine forests, they are considered rare species globally and are included in the list of rare plant species in Mongolia.

Special production steps and processes within the geographical area: The fully mature harvesting period for "Mongolian Pine Nuts," as prescribed by law, is between October 15 and March 15.


"Mongolian Pine Nuts" is known for being healthy and free from genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and pesticides. The nuts are wild-harvested by hand, without human intervention or cultivation, from the forests of Mongolia.


When harvesting, care is taken to ensure that no pine trees are cut down, no trunks or bark are damaged, and no branches are broken. Harvesting is done in such a way that it does not negatively affect the forest ecosystem, and a sufficient amount of seeds is left behind to support the natural regeneration of the forest.

Packaging and Certification

Each user of the "Mongolian Pine Nuts" geographical indication mark must sign a contract to comply with the technical requirements and undergo regular inspections. Participants must also follow the Association's rules, maintain proper accounting records, and adhere to the product's technical specifications. Certified laboratories will inspect the product every two years or whenever deemed necessary.

2. Product Origin Guarantee

The final product must originate from the geographical area specified in the geographical indication and comply with all the requirements specified in the product description and technical specifications.


The right to use the "Mongolian Pine Nuts" geographical indication mark will be granted only to certified producers and suppliers, subject to internal and external controls.


The internal control will be conducted by a Commission under the Mongolian Association for the Protection of Nut Business Entrepreneurs and Product

Manufacturers Rights to ensure that the activities of producers authorized to use the geographical indication mark comply with the product description and technical specifications.


External or independent controls will be carried out by relevant authorities according to established procedures.


3. Producer Registration and Certification

Producers (harvesters, processors, packagers) must be registered with the Mongolian Business Association of Pine Nut Entrepreneurs and Producers, ensuring that they meet the product description, technical specifications, and regulations for the use of the geographical indication mark.


Each producer must provide details of their production site, product description, size, and adherence to technical requirements. The Association will verify whether the producer meets the conditions for using the geographical indication mark. This includes checking whether:

  • Production takes place at the declared location.
  • The producer meets the established criteria.
  • The producer strictly adheres to the technical requirements set forth by the Mongolian National Standard MNS 5693:2022, "Pine Nut Product, Technical Requirements."
